CPD officer shot in Gold Coast following ‘smash-and-grab' attempt at Prada store https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-police-officer-shot-in-gold-coast-neighborhood/3320480/ 3320480 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2024/01/prada.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Chicago police were investigating after an officer and suspect were shot following a “crash-and-grab” attempt at a luxury store in the city’s Gold Coast neighborhood early Monday.

The incident began shortly after 4 a.m. as officers were responding to a burglary call at the Prada store, at 30 E. Oak Street, Police Supt. Larry Snelling said during a press conference Monday.

When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered a suspect armed with a handgun.

“The officers attempted to deescalate by telling him to drop the gun,” Snelling said. “He did not. Shortly thereafter, there was an exchange of gunfire,” Snelling said, as the suspect fled on foot.

According to Snelling, one of the officers, 55, was struck in the leg, and was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was also struck, Snelling said, and was also transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently undergoing surgery.

“There were several individuals involved in this burglary, and several several vehicles involved,” Snelling said, adding that the suspects had attempted to drive one of the vehicles, an SUV, into the Prada storefront.

Video and photos from the scene showed a dark-colored SUV smashed into the entrance of the Gold Coast Prada store, with shattered glass on the the sidewalk.

Several streets in the area were closed during rush hour as part of the investigation, including Rush Street between Walton and Oak, and State Street between Walton and Oak, NBC 5’s Lisa Chavarria reported.

According to officials the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is also investigating the incident.

No further details were immediately available.

This is a developing news story and will be updated.

Car Thieves Target Gold Coast Neighborhood Twice in 1 Week https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/car-thieves-target-gold-coast-twice-in-1-week/3011962/ 3011962 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2022/12/car-theft.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Security video captured two men stealing two vehicles from an attended parking lot near the corner of Maple and LaSalle streets in the Gold Coast neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

The company manning the lot said the attendant was moving a parked car when the two men approached with a weapon, and then stole several sets of keys from the attendant’s booth. The pair then took off in two separate vehicles, all in broad daylight, at 2:45 p.m. in the afternoon.

“It’s really disheartening,” said Nina Stillman, who lives across the street.

She and many other residents are concerned with how common the car theft problem is in Gold Coast.

Last weekend, at 6 a.m. Saturday morning, a group stole a white BMW from a residential garage near Oak Street and Michigan Avenue.

“Of course it’s disheartening to go and see that your car isn’t there, but it’s really sad this neighborhood is scary. That I don’t like to go out past dark,” Stillman added.

According to statistics from Chicago police, motor vehicle thefts are up 96% citywide when comparing the data to last year. More than 18,000 vehicles have been stolen in 2022, compared to just over 9,000 in 2021.

Ald. Brian Hopkins, who represents the area, said the Chicago Police Department’s 18th District has more than 15,000 parking spots, making it a hunting ground for thieves.

CAPS officers for the district are working on security measures with neighborhood stakeholders.

“We’re going out to all of the individual lots and doing security assessments,” Hopkins said. “We are letting the valets know there are certain things they can do to harden their target and not make it so easy for the car thieves who’ve gotten more sophisticated.”

So far, no one is in custody for Thursday’s crime.

Group Caught on Camera Stealing Car From Gold Coast Parking Garage https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/group-caught-on-camera-stealing-car-from-gold-coast-parking-garage/3007493/ 3007493 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2022/11/parking-garage-thefts.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Chicago police are searching for a group of thieves who stole a car from a parking garage near Du Sable Lake Shore Drive and Oak Street Saturday in the Gold Coast neighborhood.

That morning at approximately 6 a.m., the alleged thieves pulled in to the parking garage at 1000 N. Lake Shore Plaza, and allegedly told the parking attendant they just needed to make a U-turn.

When they did, they parked the white Porsche they were driving under the garage door, forcing it to stay open. Surveillance video then showed several men getting out of the SUV wearing ski masks.

Within a minute, three of the men come down the ramp in a white BMW car. The Porsche drives away, and the stolen BMW follows.

“They are very creative, and very smart,” said Deborah Gershbein, president of Streeterville Organization of Action Residents.

Her neighborhood was targeted three weeks ago.

“At 200 E. Delaware, in the beginning of November, there were five cars stolen from the garage,” she said.

Chicago Police issued a community alert Nov. 3 because of those thefts.

It’s not clear if the Gold Coast crew is connected to the prior garage thefts downtown.

“It’s very frustrating,” Gershbein said. “Because the minute police started cracking down and making headway with the carjackings, all of the sudden now they are getting more creative, they aren’t even bothering to carjack the car, they just take it before anybody gets in.”

The investigation is ongoing. So far no arrests have been made.

Wednesday is Your Last Chance to Visit Tavern on Rush in the Gold Coast https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/wednesday-is-your-last-chance-to-visit-tavern-on-rush-in-the-gold-coast/2977754/ 2977754 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2019/09/Patio_Tavern-on-Rush_Exterior-1.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,201 Chicagoans have one final day to enjoy a meal at an iconic Gold Coast restaurant.

The steakhouse, a highly recognizable landmark at the corner of Rush Street, earlier this year said it planned to close on Jan. 1, 2023, after the building’s landlord opted to not extend the restaurant’s lease. However, in a statement last week posted to Facebook, the eatery said that “due to contractual issues beyond our control,” its doors will close four months early — on Oct. 26.

“As many of you are aware, our landlord earlier this year decided not to extend our lease at our longtime home at 1031 N. Rush St.” the post reads. “We had in place a verbal agreement that would have allowed us to stay in the building until the end of the year, culminating in a final dinner service on New Year’s Eve.”

“Unfortunately, due to contractual issues beyond our control, we have to close earlier than expected,” it continues. “Our final day will be Wednesday, October 26. We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience to our customers, who are like family to us. We tried to extend our lease but could not.”

The statement goes on to say that the restaurant will continue keep its staffed employed through the remainder of the year, adding that some employees have been with the business “since 1998 when we opened our doors.”

The letter also extended gratitude to the restaurant’s guests and customers for a “nearly 25-year remarkable run.”

According to a 2020 article from Eater Chicago, Tavern on Rush is one of the highest grossing restaurants, not only in Chicago, but also nationally — at $12.8 million.

Tavern on Rush Will Shut its Gold Coast Doors Earlier Than Expected https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/tavern-on-rush-will-shut-its-gold-coast-doors-earlier-than-expected/2973581/ 2973581 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2019/09/Patio_Tavern-on-Rush_Exterior-1.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,201 The closure of a popular restaurant in Chicago’s Gold Coast is coming sooner than expected.

Tavern on Rush initially revealed in August that it would cease its operations Jan. 1, 2023 after serving diners for 25 years. The stakehouse said the closure stemmed from the end of its lease at 1031 N. Rush St.

In a letter to team members released Thursday, restaurant owner Phil Stefani said a verbal agreement was reached with the building’s landlord to extend the lease beyond its Oct. 31 expiration date. But “due to contract matters,” Stefani said the eatery’s doors are now due to close Oct. 26.

“We are disappointed that we have to speed up our closing date,” the letter read. “We tried to extend that, but could not.”

The letter also extended gratitude to the restaurant’s employees and customers for a “remarkable run.”

The restaurant said it will cancel reservations that were made for November and December.

“For now, we remain humbled by your dedication to this very special place,” the letter continued. “We will keep you posted on further developments.”

According to a 2020 article from Eater Chicago, Tavern on Rush is one of the highest grossing restaurants, not only in Chicago, but also nationally — at $12.8 million.

Iconic Gold Coast Mansion Currently Most Expensive Home on the Chicago Market https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/iconic-gold-coast-mansion-currently-most-expensive-home-on-the-chicago-market/2952727/ 2952727 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2022/09/Home-for-Sale-Sign-1.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 An iconic mansion in the heart of Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood is on the market as the city’s most expensive home.

The six-bedroom, 13-bathroom, 20,002 sq. ft. mansion located at 3 W. Burton Pl. is currently retailing for $18,750,000, $3 million more than the city’s next most-expensive listing.

The home has been listed on the market for nearly two years according to Zillow, with additional features that make the luxurious listing truly unique for its location.

In addition to the home’s bedrooms, the mansion includes an exercise room, game room, library, office and full basement with four fireplaces and an elevator.

The kitchen amenities are also notable, with a double oven, bar fridge, wine fridge and indoor grill all included in the home.

According to Redfin, the home’s massive size and price work out to be $937 per square foot, helping to make sense of the home’s extraordinarily high price, even when compared to other homes listed above $10 million.

Located in the heart of perhaps the city’s most luxurious neighborhood, the home’s location also certainly contributes to the price. With high walkability and proximity to Lake Michigan, the combined rarity of the home’s size and central location have upheld the price of 3 W. Burton as the home approaches nearly two years on the market.

Below is a list of the 10 most expensive Chicago homes currently on the market alongside their asking price:

Photos: See Inside The $5.95M Historic Gold Coast Home From ‘Ferris Bueller's Day Off' https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/photos-see-inside-the-5-95m-historic-gold-coast-home-from-ferris-buellers-day-off/2938845/ 2938845 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2022/09/ferris-cameo-house-1.png?fit=300,174&quality=85&strip=all You might recognize the home at 1401 N. Dearborn St., in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, but you aren’t exactly sure how. Or from what.

It may be the French Rocco-style formal dining room, the crystal chandelier, the marble floor foyer, or the grand staircase.

Or, it could be the outside of the historic Queen Anne — which was briefly used for as the backdrop for a scene in the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

The 8,650 square foot home, famously known as the Luther McConnell House, was originally constructed in 1877 by architect Evanston-based Asa Lyon and then later remodeled 1920s by Chicago-based architect Richard Nelson, who, in his commission for the project, took design cues from a ship — the S.S. Normandie, a French ocean liner that made its maiden voyage in 1935, Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty says.

With hammered copper sinks, restored stained glass and period-specific pendants and sconces, the house oozes with history.

But perhaps one of the most historical moments Chicagoans may think of when they pass the building dates back only to 1986, when when a young Abe Froman, also known as the Sausage King of Chicago, demanded to be seated at a table inside.

While the scenes inside the fancy and fake French restaurant Chez Quis were filmed in Los Angeles, a post from Choose Chicago says, it’s the McConnell house that is used for the exterior shot — although it looks a bit different in present day.

Other amenities inside the home include five bedrooms, seven-and-a-half bathrooms, a library and media room, a salon, a conservatory, a sun room, a roof-top deck, an elevator, and “a massive great room with high ceilings, and a “burlwood-and-marble-fronted fireplace and gilt wrought-iron window gates from the Normandie.”

Here’s a look inside.
